Early in 2006, Grantmakers in Garden City, Kansas gathered to discuss collaboration and promote dialog between granting organizations. Opening a valuable line of communication between the participating entities, programs and opportunities to work together were determined.
Out of this work came efforts to provide education to area non-profits: seminars that would help in the governance and operations of non-profits and charitable entities that could be offered locally, saving travel time and resources.
The goal of this initial effort was to help make area charities more efficient.
A second goal that emerged was to make philanthropy more effective. For example, streamlining the grant process, creating a common point of entry to the philanthropic community for charities, opening a dialogue to share "lessons learned" between organizations, all while promoting Garden City as "philanthropically progressive".
